Remember LP Records?
In the process of fall cleaning - really pitching things out the door type - we found the old records that were played in the evening to "put us to sleep"! Mama would put a stack of 3-4 long play records on the record player, and we would go to sleep listening to them play. Seldom did we hear the last one. My youngest sister was here a few days ago, and I played her a "sample". She soon had tears in her eyes and said, "Time just goes too fast" I also played the first part of one record for my father over the phone. He immediately said it was his, how did I get it. He was unaware that it had left his home many years ago, a part of my record collection. Time has a way of doing that to us, making us think it was only yesterday!
I purchased a nice machine that will allow me to record these records (and cassette tapes) onto a CD, and enjoy them for a long time - not getting more scratches on them then they already have! Anyone have a suggestion as to how they should be cleaned before playing them? Some of them are really dirty!
There was one record that was a surprise to me, had forgotten about quite a few. It was "Lift Your Glad Voices" by the Mount Pleasant Mennonite Chorus! The director was Jane Burkholder. There are some Bergey, Keffer, Broadwater, Buckwalter, Mast, Miller, Wenger, Hobbs, Layman and other names on the label above the picture. Maybe I should have created a copy of the picture to include here!
December will be busy, so the "recording" will have to wait, maybe til Spring.

That Mt. Pleasant record was a part of BBN's (Bible Broadcasting Network) collection of songs for a long time. I'm not sure if it is still being played or not. It started when their headquarters was here in Norfolk. Can you get them down there? I know they have really branched out.
My parents have that same recording as several of my dad's siblings are on it. I'd like to get one of those machines too. I've seen them in the sale papers a time or two. Our current record player hasn't been working in years and so I haven't been able to listen to my old ones for a very long time.
My grandpa always said that a soft damp rag would do the trick to clean off old records.
Iuse a damp rag to clean my records. I like to collect them, usually thrift store finds. I've been thinking about recording my records onto CD's too, but don't have the equipment to do it. Have a great weekend. Anna
We have some cleaner and a thingy that looks like a chalk board eraser to clean records. And I've been hanging on to it for so long and keep thinking "should I just throw this away?". Now I know not to. I also have gobs of records that I can't listen to because our record player isn't set up (yet). But I'd like to get one of those machines, too, and record on CD's. We have some cassette tapes that we recorded off the radio of the "Haven of Rest" quartet and I just LOVE to listen to it. Can't wait til I can record them on CD's so I can just listen to my hearts content
. They are probably my favorite when it comes to listening to soothing and relaxing Christian music. The kind you want to listen to when you lie down for a little snooze. Then there's the southern gospel type like Gold City and others that I like to listen to when I'm working in the house to put a little spring in my step. Where'd you get your new machine and how much was it? Sounds like a good Christmas present for me....you know to give to Ray
thanks ~ Ruth
